Recent figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and the Local Government demonstrates the number of completed new builds and those under construction are at their highest level for years and the rest of the UK.
Quarter one of 2021 has seen nearly 50,000 new builds completed, a year on year increase of 4 per cent and the highest number for two decades. Construction also began on another 46,000 homes in the first quarter of this year, representing a fifteen-year high, despite the pandemic and associated lockdowns.
Construction industry to keep up the pace
Notwithstanding the outstanding achievements of builders in getting back on site safely to keep new builds coming, the drive can’t stop now. Estimates suggest the UK could require as many as 340,000 new homes per year to keep up with the demand in cities. Spiralling house prices preventing first-time buyers from gaining a foothold on the property ladder can be addressed with more new build homes.
